EXTRACTION OF ETHANOL FROM FRUIT
Aim: to
extract ethanol from fruit.
Apparatus: rotary vapor, electrical water bath, measuring cylinder
.alcoholic hydrometer, filter paper, volumetric flask, 500ml measuring
cylinder, electrical oven, thermometer.
Sample: Starch
contained fruit.
Procedures for the extraction of ethanol from fruit
- Allow the sample to decay for some days.
- Blend the sample and extract the juices.
- Add potassium tetraoxo-manganate(vii) (KMnO4), saccaromyces(yeast) to the sample and keep in an oven at 37^0C for some days to be fermented.
- After fermentation, test the sample with alcoholic hydrometer for the present of ethanol. Sieve 500ml of the sample using white transparent cloth or a filter paper, and take it to the rotary vapor apparatus for the extraction.
note: The
evaporation point of ethanol is 78^0C, therefore the temperature of the water
bath will be set to 78^0C
