DETERMINATION OF ASTM COLOUR OF
PETROLEUM PRODUCT
Aim: To
determine the ASTM colour of a petroleum product.
Apparatus:The oleum
oil color comparator, measuring cylinder.
Sample: Petroleum
products
Significant/ uses:
- It tells us the degree of refinement of a petroleum
product (how pure is it).
- It also serves as a safety net when dealing with
petroleum products, e.g. kerosene is blue or sometimes colourless.
- It is also used to monitor pollution,( e.g. a fresh
oil will be lighter than used oil that has been polluted) and alteration of
oil. Polluted product will become darker in colour than it pure state.
Theory/ Definition:
ASTM means
America Society for Testing and Material.
The
equipment, oleum oil color comparator has three sample compartments, the left
and the right for reference standard colour, and the middle compartment is for
the sample to be tested.
Procedure for the Determination of
ASTM Colour of Petroleum Product
1.
Fill two containers with colour reference standard
(the left and the right).
2.
Fill the middle sample container with the sample to
be tested and placed back in the sample compartment.
3.
Switch on the equipment and leave it for 15 minutes
for the light to brighten up
4.
Use the both Knobs, the left and the right to
regulate until the left and right point of view are the same with the middle
point of view, i.e. until three of them are uniform.
5.
Take the readings of the left and right Knobs and
find the average.
6. Compare your result to the international standard
value for the product been tested. If the value is higher than the
international standard value, it means presents of impurity, e.g. kerosene both
knobs are less than 0.5, Diesel both knobs are 6 and 6.5.
