DETERMINATION OF SMOKE POINT OF
KEROSENE
Aim: To determine the smoke of kerosene.
Apparatus: Smoke point apparatus, weak, measuring cylinder.
Sample: Kerosene
Significant: To check for the degree of refinement of the kerosene
Theory/ Definition:
Smoke point
is the point at which the smoke of kerosene vanishes. It is measured in unit of
millimeter, kerosene has an expected smoke point of 22ml, below this expected
smoke point means that the kerosene contained more volatile liquid, and above
this expected smoke point means that the kerosene contained more of
hydrocarbons.
Procedure for determination of the
smoke point of kerosene
- Measure 50ml of the sample and into a measuring cylinder and label it.
- Dry the weak in an oven for some minutes to remove moisture.
- Trim the surface of the weak equal with scissor or razor.
- Insert the weak in the beaker containing the kerosene sample and allow it to soak for five minutes.
- Remove the weak from the container and fix it into the sample container with the kerosene filled up.
- Insert the sample container into the smoke point apparatus.
- Light the weak with a light a source and set it to 10ml.
- Timed for 10 minutes and increase the knob until you see excess smoke coming out.
- Reduce the knob until no smoke come out, and record your reading in millimeter.
